Dogs Playing Poker refers to a series of oil
paintings by the American artist C. M. Coolidge,
commissioned by the publishing house Brown &
Bigelow in 1903 to market cigars. According to
critic Annette Ferrara, Dogs Playing Poker is
deeply rooted in American, if not global,
collective "schlock" imagery. All the paintings
in the series depict anthropomorphic dogs. The
nine paintings in which the dogs sit around a
gaming table became particularly well known.
The home furnishings depicted in the paintings
are considered typical of slightly pompous
status symbols of the working class in the
United States. The dogs, on the other hand, are
drawn as members of the liberal professions or
(almost exclusively) men of the upper middle
class. The period in which the pictures were
created also coincides with the rise of poker
as a game for soldiers of fortune to become a
